Rebellious Thoughts #53 - 🤘 Become Irrelevant To Always Be Relevant

By Gus Balbontin

Hey Rebels!

As always, I promise to provoke you in less than 5 min once a week so that you can stay adaptable and on top of your game.

YEW!

Super quick one today and back to the original structure (A.D.A.P.T.) to change things up a little. I think next week I’ll be exploring job descriptions, KPIs and Gantt charts…actually maybe humanoids… anyway!

Oh… but before we dive into today’s newsletter… I’m really really excited about something that’s coming next week!!

We’ve been working really hard on launching my Portfolio Career video course, called “Career Shake Up!” and it’s almost finished!!!

A little bit of course recording backstage.

Okay, now let’s get into today’s newsletter! (or check all the previous ones):

AWE

Reading a book now called Lifespan by David Sinclair that explores aging… a stat on the book floored me.

If we fix all cancer, we would only add on average 2.1 yrs of life to humans.

If we fix cardiovascular disease only 1.5 yrs on average.

I don’t know what I thought before knowing this, I guess I never asked the question, but in my mind fixing cancer meant more… but on average it’s not that impactful to human life.

He argues that the real disease is aging, fixing each one of the symptoms of aging (like cancer and cardiovascular disease) will only help a little bit.

Interestingly we see aging as inevitable rather than as a disease.

Nature has made biological structures that last longer… trees, some sharks, tortoises, etc.

So his point is that it doesn’t have to be this way.

What would living 150 or 200 years do to your family and the relationship with your kids?
Eg: if you invited your family to your 200th birthday party you need to book a stadium…65,000 of them will join you including the youngest in the fam, your great-great-great-great-great-great-grandkids!! Fuck, happy birthday would sound so loud and epic!

What would the impact be on work? sport? superfunds? insurance? mobility?

Anyway, have a think!

DEAL FLOW

We recently visited SpaceCube, an Aussie company specialising in fast, cost-effective deployment of stand-alone buildings.

Imagine for the F1, for the Aussie Open, living quarters for miners, etc.

Affordable housing is a big trend emerging… and construction labour is declining, which is squeezing the industry.

We either start prefabricating homes, or modularise them, or Lego them, or have a bunch of humanoids building them for us quicker, faster, cheaper.

Pay attention and explore shelter, it is one of those critical Maslow hierarchy elements.

ACTION

Try to make yourself irrelevant and you will always be relevant!

Take 1/2 day next week, change the environment around you (go to a cafe you have never been to or the public library, or a park, or a place with an epic view) and write down how you could replace your role… makes no difference if you are the owner of the business or have a role in a corporation.

What combination of AI tools and automations do you need?

Maybe also things you shouldn’t do any more cos they don’t really add value?

Have a play, if you think you cannot be replaced you are not thinking hard enough - that outcome on its own is very profound - careful!

PERSONAL

Thank you everyone for your messages of love and affection and alignment with what I wrote last week about relationships and care.

It feels insanely amazing to know that my messages land and people get some value from them.

If it’s not for you sending me feedback and a little note, I would have stopped writing by now (and last week’s it was already 1 year from my first newsletter ever!! WOOHOO!!).

I’ll be honest, I suffer like everyone lapses of impostor syndrome and wonder if I am actually having a conversation with myself hahaha!

Anyway, if you liked what you read, if you thought about it, if you shared it with your partner or kids or friends, if it made you do something please PLEASE tell me - it means the world to me!

TRY

Here is another challenge for this week:

CHALLENGE OF THE WEEK:
Find yourself some good skipping rocks. Head to the beach, river or lake and see how many skips you can get! If you have never done it before, one skip is enough! If you have done it before but not for a while off you go, you know what’s up!

With the kids we often do skipping but also splashless dives… the idea is to use similar skinny rocks, throw them really high and when they dive in the water splash the least amount possible! We give the dives scores… like when you watch the olympics! Hahah

Rock skipping with the family!

Hey and if you have never thrown a rock before - like ever - oh my god do this please!!! You’ll connect with your ancient ancestors and channel your inner hunter-gatherer!!!! It’s amazing!

Ok enough.

Love

Gus
